Advanced Multiscale Biological imaging with European Research infrastructures

The AMBER postdoc programme has been assembled for the exploitation and development of large-scale European infrastructures to address key needs for biological imaging over length scales from molecular, through cellular, to tissue, organ and organism levels of organisation.

It brings together a wide range of competence including clinical practitioners, biological and biomedical scientists, physical scientists, and facility / infrastructure scientists.

The AMBER programme will give you the competence, experience and network you need to build your career. There are many reasons to apply to AMBER, specifically:

  • The programme is highly interdisciplinary, with projects ranging over combinations of clinical work, epidemiology, biomechanics, translational medicine, through cell biology to structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, modelling and simulation, and bioinformatics.

  • We span many sectors, including academia, research infrastructures, research institutes, hospitals, medical diagnosis, medtech, drug discovery and design, and artificial intelligence and machine learning tools.

  • You will have the opportunity to gain broad and unique experience covering the use of small and local, through medium to very large scale research infrastructures. Methods covered in the programme range from optical and IR microscopy techniques, including optical and x-ray fluorescence, x-ray and neutron tomography, MRI, mass spectrometry imaging, solvent and solid state NMR, x-ray and neutron crystallography, and of course cryo-electron microscopy.

  • You will have a singular chance to collaborate over disciplines and sectors, embedded in a big network of excellent researchers, with secondments in interesting places.

It is a five-year programme that will recruit 47 postdoc fellows in total for 3-year contracts each in at least 3 call rounds. 42 of these are co-funded by the EU, and 5 are co-funded by UKRI.

The positions will be made available via at least six implementing partners in four countries: Lund University with LINXS and MAX IV (Sweden), The European Spallation Source ESS ERIC (Sweden), The Institut Laue Langevin ILL (France), The European Moleular Biology Laboratory EMBL (France), The International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines IMol (Poland), and the University of Leceister (United Kingdom).

AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

Eligible candidates must comply with the MSCA mobility rule. This means that the candidate can come from any country in the world, but you:

  • May not apply if you have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country hosting the position for more than 12 months during the 3 years preceding the call deadline, unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.

Furthermore:

  • You should have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will also be considered eligible to apply.

  • You can have a maximum of eight years experience in research, from the date of the award of your PhD degree.

  • Candidates must have at least one original publication in a peer-reviewed journal accepted by the call deadline.

  • You must be available for employment, ready to start at or near the announced start date of the position applied for.
